A PvP character can only enter PvP areas.
A PvE character can PvE and PvP, so if you want both make a PvE. Each character you make can be either one you want, regardless of what your previous characters are. |

A PvP character is created at lv20 and it can freely use any skills and pieces of equipment that are unlocked on that account (there's a separate editor you can use after character creation to gear up your character as you wish). It can only enter PvP areas (Battle Isles, Guild Halls and Alliance Battles).
A PvE character is created at lv1 and has to earn all its own skills and equipment through playing a campaign. A PvE character can enter PvP areas but that is usually not advisable because of the greater flexibility of a PvP only character. Since each campaign comes with 4 character slots (or 4 slots from the first one and 2 more per each additional campaign if you bind them together as you should) most people make several PvE characters (either to play PvE or to store stuff because the per-character storage in GW is on the smallish side) and leave one free slot for a PvP character that can be remade (rolled) any time as needed. |

Note that with today's skill updates you the skills will function differently in pvp then in pve. Also, ur pvp char will always be lvl 20 & have max weapons/armor. A pve char wont necessarily.

Agree with tmakinen. I also have 2/8 PvP chars and the rest PvE.
PvP chars have just a great advantage in PvP, because they can get any rune/insignia/weapon/upgrade without paying gold for it (you have to have m unlocked) If you are very rich you can PvP with PvEchars, but asuming you aren't rich when you just start guildwars, I would make a PvE and PvP char. |

GW is different than WoW. In WoW, people usually only have 1 char. In GW, everyone has multiple characters. Me, I got 9, and I still dont have enough character slots to my liking :P Just make a PvE and a PvP char and try them both

well, remember that you have a few slots so you can play around a bit creating PvP chars, plus if you find a PvP combo of armor and runes and what not, save it in a template so all you have to do is upload on to a new char. As for the PvE, if you want to keep them seperate you can, If you want to have a PvE/PvP char, level up quick.

It takes about four hours to reach max level in GW. Don't sweat it!
